Bush might be able to redeem himself with a personal tribute to Reagan on his 80th birthday next month. But NEWSWEEK was told that rather than attending himself, Bush plans to send Dan Quayle to the birthday bash Reagan’s chums are throwing for him in Los Angeles. Quayle is a conservative favorite, but many on the right think Bush should make the trip himself.
In other Reagan news, sources close to the ex-president say that at the behest of his wife, Nancy, he is stepping up his schedule of interviews to plug his autobiography - including a guest spot on Larry King’s TV show this week. The memoir, “An American Life,” is a best seller, but Reagan sources say Nancy is irritated that sales are lagging behind those of “Millie’s Book,” the dog’s-eye view of life in the Bush White House. “The dog book has really gotten under her skin,” says a Reagan insider.
